Director Dr Mike Wells and Associate Director Lincoln Garland jointly presented to the Urban Design Forum at Savills offices in Southampton to an assemblage of local authority planners and consultants. The complimentary topics presented related to the 'compact city' making both the ecological case for such development and for the role of biodiversity and ecosystem service provision in making such developments successful.
Director Dr Mike Wells presented on the topic of 'Biodiverse Water Sensitive Urban Design at the Athletes' Village: East Village Stratford' at a very-well attended meeting at the University College London relating to 'Achieving the Blue Green Dream'. UCL felt that the village would be an ideal site for the trailing the analytical and modelling systems of the 'Blue Green Dream' approach of ecosystem service optimisation being developed by the team led by Professor Cedo Maksimovic at the University.
Director Dr Mike Wells provided a CPD presentation at Barton Willmore, London, entitled 'Landscape, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services at the Heart of Sustainable Architecture and Masterplanning?' to staff from a wide range of disciplines. The approach set out was considered to resonate strongly with the aspirations for sustainable planning pursued by Barton Willmore nationwide.
Director Dr Mike Wells provided a CPD presentation at PRP Architects, London, titled: 'Landscape, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services at the Heart of Sustainable Architecture and Masterplanning?' The presentation was attended by over 20 staff and was enthusiastically received. 'Many thanks for taking the time to visit us yesterday and provide one of the most highly attended CPD events this year. Personally I found your presentation very engaging and I know the rest of the staff here did too.
Directors at PRP saw significant scope for collaborations with Biodiversity by Design helping to enrich and compliment the ecological functionality of PRP masterplans and designs.
Director Dr Mike Wells provided a presentation on the URBIS Webinar 5: Citizen participation and stewardship: whose earth is it anyway? entitled 'Creating the Conditions for Effective Citizen Participation In Stewardship And Enjoyment Of Nature On The Rapidly Developing Asian Coasts'. The presentation drew on extensive project work by Biodiversity by Design in Southeast Asia over the past 5 or so years; and discussed both the impediments to effective public participation in development control in the area, and the more successful examples of it.
Director Dr Mike Wells provided a CPD presentation at Stride Treglown architects in Bristol, for 'Sustainable Strides week' focussing on Water Sensitive Urban Design entitled 'Green Infrastructure, Biodiversity and the Future' to an audience over 30 staff and interested members of the public.
Lincolnshire Lakes Planning Applications is a finalist for the Excellence in Planning for the Natural Environment Award for the RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence 2015
Director Dr Mike Wells presented public lecture at the University of Kent School of Architecture on the subject of 'Biodiverse Urban Design in Theory and Practice'. Head of School Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou commended the extent and breadth of work of Dr Wells practice, Biodiversity by Design in both the theory and delivery of creating sustainable green cities.
